Safe Sport ~ Concussions ~ One to One interactions

APR 24, 2019 - Bryan Attridge

SafeSport Requirement - Reminder that the federal law and US Soccer's policy (as well as our policy) is that any adult who has regular interaction with minors is required to complete the safesport training before interaction with youth players. We have configured the system so that the coaches and admins will be redlined on the game day rosters if the certificate is not uploaded - but this is just one way to encourage completion. Again, anyone that has regular interaction with youth is required to take the training before their interaction. This includes coaches, admins, volunteers and anyone in your organization that falls under this description (some clubs may have other positions) In addition, US Soccer requires all board members, employees and other high level members of your organization to take the training even if they don't have regular contact with youth.

We've had several reports so far this season of coaches attempting to coach games while being redlined because of not completing this certification. The bottom line is that they should not be participating in any form with youth from your club until the certification is done. If you have coaches or admins that have not completed the certification please put a process/procedure in place to remove them from participation until they finish the certification. This includes trainings, practice, team meetings, etc.

We need everyones help and buy in on this to make sure the federal law, US Soccer's, and UYSA's policy is being followed, and most importantly that we're all looking out for our youth and helping to keep them safe.

Updates to Safesport - Safesport has updated their training program so there are no longer 3 different modules and certificates. The 3 modules have been combined to 1 - 90 minute module. Participants can still stop during the training and resume where they left off when ready. You won't have to worry about members updating the wrong certificate because there will only be one, master certificate. Also - US Soccer is getting ready to launch what they are calling their Learning Center, which will allow us to access the safesport training directly (and free code to take the training). This change will be helpful because we won't have to keep track of the access code they've given us, email it back and forth to get it to participants, and worry about distributing or posting it incorrectly or without permission. We'll send you more info on this as they get closer to launching.

Concussion Policy - Our concussion policy is that UYSA is in charge of clearing players at state hosted events (this means tournaments and programs and that we run and are present at - ie state cup/pres cup/odp, etc). If the head injury occurs at an event that we are not hosting (most likely a team practice or league game) then the club is in charge of the clearing the player. This is where you come in as the RMC. We can help show you how to clear a player who has been given a concussion tag in the system (I also believe we went through that on the webinar that we hosted and sent out) so please let us know if you need additional  training. Bottom line is - if a head injury is suspected, the player must be removed from play and cannot resume play until they've been cleared by a certified health professional who has had concussion training in the past 3 years. Once they are cleared they would submit the paperwork to you and then can resume activity. Please keep clearance letters/forms on file for at least 2 years.

One on One interaction - One best practice that has been pushed by US Youth for years is "no 1 on 1 interaction between a coach and player". US Soccer has now mandated that we update our policies to include reasonable procedures to limit 1 on 1 interaction between coaches and players. Coaches should not be alone with a player and should never text single players. Communication should be done on group texts or threads and where possible with parents included. We will discuss this item more as this is something we need to have officially in place by September, 2019.
